German EV charging network Deutschlandnetz opens first location

Government-funded German electric vehicle (EV) charging network, Deutschlandnetz, has opened its first location in the town of Düren, 30km South West of Cologne. The site is the first of over 900 projected locations funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport.

The new Deutschlandnetz charging park is equipped with four high-performance charging points with an output of up to 400 kW. This means that the site, operated by fast-charging company Fastned, currently offers the highest charging capacity in Germany.

Catering and sanitary facilities are already being implemented, alongside the construction of up to eight further high-performance fast-charging points.

“With the opening of the first location in the German network, we are ushering in a new phase. It shows that the expansion of a nationwide, needs-based and user-friendly charging infrastructure is making progress. The German network will now grow step by step,” said Federal Minister Dr. Volker Wissing.

The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport aims to fill any remaining “blank spots” on the charging map through the implementation of the Deutschlandnetz. This will ensure that the nearest fast-charging point can be reached anywhere in Germany in just a few minutes.

The more than 900 locations with around 8,000 high-power charging points take into account both the existing fast-charging infrastructure and the increasing number of EVs in the coming years. The Federal Ministry of Transport is providing a total of around €1.9 billion in funding.
