Amazon has announced it will phase out its checkout-less grocery stores with “Just Walk Out” technology.  First reported in The Information, the company’s senior vice president of grocery stores announced they’re moving away from Just Walk Out, which relied on cameras and sensors to track what people were leaving the store with.

Just over half of Amazon Fresh stores are equipped with Just Walk Out. The technology allows customers to skip checkout altogether using AI cameras and sensors to detect what customers have selected.

The company said it will open a new set of grocery stores that won’t feature the grab-and-go checkout system following a 18-month hiatus and will instead introduce Dash Carts, enabling shoppers to scan their groceries while exploring the site.

Although the technology will be dropped in some locations, it will still be used at Amazon Go and smaller Amazon Fresh locations in the United Kingdom as well as at third-party locations.
