5 Keys to Driving Standardization, Security & Scalable Growth in the Forecourt Sector

By: Morten Raaby, General Manager Europe, Titan Cloud

The downstream energy and forecourt sector is moving fast toward digital transformation. But one barrier still slows progress: the lack of unified technology standards.

Without consistent frameworks for data exchange, every wetstock management project becomes more costly, complex, and difficult to scale across regions. This fragmentation inflates costs, reduces efficiency, and slows innovation at a time when operators are under constant margin pressure.

Industry standardization, interoperability and connectivity frameworks are critical to enable more reliable operations, stronger customer experiences, and faster progress on digital transformation.

Here are 5 keys to unlocking growth:

1. Lower Costs Through Connectivity and APIs

Real-time fuel analytics, AI, and advanced wetstock management all depend on one thing: moving data securely from the forecourt to the cloud. It sounds simple: all the data is already on-site. But transferring it securely to the cloud has traditionally been slow, costly, and complex.

In 2025, Titan Cloud launched its customer-facing API environment, reducing the need for additional file-transfer hardware by enabling direct, software-based connectivity.

While core forecourt devices like ATGs (Automatic Tank Gauges) and FCCs (Forecourt Controllers) will always remain essential, our approach avoids layering on extra hardware whenever secure, digital-first integration is possible. This shift streamlines data collection, speeds deployment, and strengthens data protection, while still allowing hardware where connectivity options are limited.

By leveraging Titan Cloud APIs instead of hardware-heavy approaches, operators can save £70,000–£100,000 across a 100-site network—accelerating digital transformation while minimizing capital expenditure.

2. Stronger Security with Digital-First Integration

Every extra piece of hardware on a forecourt is another potential point of exposure. On-site data collection devices can be physically compromised, stolen, or left exposed if updates are missed, creating risks that multiply as networks grow. Moving from hardware to API solutions reduces cyber risk by minimizing attack vectors and centralizing updates.

Instead of relying on dozens, or even hundreds of on-site boxes to handle sensitive data, operators can centralize security in the cloud. Authentication, encryption, and updates are managed in one

place, closing the gaps that legacy setups leave behind. Operators gain stronger protection while lowering the cost and effort of maintaining site security.

3. Scale Seamlessly Across Regions

Expanding across borders is difficult enough without technology creating obstacles. Hardware-heavy integrations often don’t translate from one geography to the next, forcing operators to rebuild systems region by region. That fragmentation drains resources and delays growth.

APIs help eliminate that barrier. Whether you’re connecting 10 sites or 1,000, the setup is essentially the same. This allows operators to move faster, keep a consistent backbone in place, and align to local compliance needs without reinventing the wheel. With a unified approach that scales everywhere, growth becomes smoother, more predictable, and far less costly.

4. Real-Time Visibility and Control

Delays in data quickly become costly. A late view of a delivery that doesn’t add up, a missed critical alarm, or an equipment fault left unnoticed for hours can directly impact margins and disrupt operations. Legacy systems that rely on batch transfers or polling leave operators reacting to problems only after the damage is done.

The true value of data lies in what you can do with it once it’s securely in the cloud. Titan Cloud APIs provide instant access to inventory levels, deliveries, tank gauge alarms, equipment alerts, and sales transactions—without waiting for legacy integrations. This visibility powers advanced wetstock management, AI-driven analytics, and faster, smarter decision-making.

5. Industry Collaboration for Global Standardization:

True standardization requires industry-wide collaboration. That’s why the Joint Wet Stock Management Work Group, a Conexxus–IFSF initiative, is so important. This effort is setting the first global standards for wetstock management, harmonizing data flows and improving interoperability across regions. For retailers this will mean lower integration costs, stronger reporting, and more reliable operations.

IFSF and Conexxus have already developed comprehensive data dictionaries that align key concepts, data elements, and business terms across the forecourt and retail fuel sectors, laying the foundation for a truly connected, global ecosystem.
